Christo and Jeanne-Claude
Centre for Contemporary Art
The renovation of the building aims to create a world-class art centre and to harmoniously integrate it into the existing urban environment, so that the Centre and the nearby Museum of Humour and Satire form a cultural complex located in a zone for recreation, sports, and urban events along the banks of the Yantra River.
Сградата на бившия Текстилен техникум е разположена на левия бряг на река Янтра. Построена е през 1970, за да посреща образователните нужди на водещата индустрия в града. През годините текстилното производство в Габрово намалява и училището затваря врати през 2008.
The building was chosen to house the Centre for Contemporary Art because of its good condition, its high and spacious halls, and its connection to one of the materials most characteristic of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s projects – textiles.
The school’s architectural character is a combination of familiar modernist strategies, including rectilinear volumes with expansive glazed openings, a robust reinforced concrete structural system, generous floor-to-floor heights, wide circulation corridors, and extensively glazed facades.
These characteristics are typical of institutional buildings from the 1970s and represent valuable architectural assets in the adaptation of the Textile Technical School to contemporary cultural functions.
